Dedicated, passionate volunteers help to bring our organization’s conservation and educational goals to life. Volunteers help us in a variety of ways and, in the process, gain a sense of accomplishment and personal satisfaction. Together…
we have fun…
we learn…
and we protect, restore, and research Alaska’s wildlife and their habitats.
There are many ways you can volunteer to help wildlife. Below are some available opportunities:
Tabling: Help spread the message about protecting Alaska’s wildlife! Tabling at events is incredibly valuable. This can consist of getting petitions signed, running wildlife trivia, and saying hello to the public while sitting at a table/tent at fairs, festivals, and concerts. The goal of tabling is to share our message and build our network around supporting Alaska’s wildlife. All materials and information are provided to prep volunteers.
Wildlife Wednesdays: From October-April, these free Wildlife Wednesdays start with a short presentation from a wildlife expert, author, photographer, etc. and are followed by a period of Q & A. Every Wednesday features a different wildlife topic, so there’s always something for everyone! Currently, we host monthly Wildlife Wednesdays virtually for Juneau (Southeast chapter), Anchorage, and Soldotna (Kenai Peninsula chapter). Volunteers can help as speakers or as hosts for these events.
Monitor for critically endangered Cook Inlet beluga whales: The belugas in Cook Inlet are in decline, and we are part of the Alaska Beluga Monitoring Partnership (AKBMP) to monitor their populations and behaviors. AKBMP is a collaboration between AWA and several organizations that facilitate citizen science beluga monitoring in Alaska’s Cook Inlet. Together, we design standardized scientific monitoring protocols, train volunteers to support monitoring efforts, and coordinate shore-based beluga monitoring activities at various sites throughout the inlet. You can be part of our volunteer team helping to monitor and restore these critically endangered species. Volunteer for the AKBMP monitoring program by emailing alaskabmp@gmail.com with your information.
Photography and videography: Use your skills in still photography or video to capture all the fun and beauty of the wildlife in the state of Alaska. Donated work can be used on our social media, in our design materials and reports, and for promotional purposes.
Other opportunities may be available and arise throughout the year. To keep up to date and discover opportunities as they arise, sign up for our newsletter (scroll below and subscribe to stay in the know!) or follow us on social media (Facebook and Instagram).
