To understand Alaska's wildlife management, we need to understand some politics. All the State's wildlife management decisions are made by a seven-member Board of Game. There are no designated seats on the Board. Members are nominated by the Governor and confirmed by the legislature- membership on the Board of Game is basically a political appointment. The Board of Game establishes open and closed seasons, areas for taking game, sets bag limits, and regulates hunting and trapping methods and means. The board is also involved with setting policy and direction for wildlife management and makes allocative decisions between human users. Understanding the Governor's interests, supporters, and connections is critical context in understanding the direction of the State's wildlife management.
