Chickaloon Flats: A Hidden Gem on the Kenai ...

Within sight of almost half of all Alaskans lies a little known tidal estuary.  Perched along Turnagain Arm on the northwestern Kenai Peninsula, the 27,000-acre Chickaloon Flats is the only part of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge that touches marine waters.  It represents 7% of the total estuarine area in Cook Inlet and Prince William Sound, the two water bodies that form the peninsula. As such, it’s a small but important part of the Pacific Flyway for migratory shorebirds and waterfowl.

By the 1920s, Musk oxen had disappeared from Alaska, with the only remaining animals being found in east Greenland and Arctic Canada. These reintroduced specie are living relics from a prehistoric age, when musk oxen roamed the northern plains alongside mammoths and saber-toothed cats.

Today the Bureau of Land Management completed the next stage in the review process for the proposed road to Ambler, a publicly funded private mining road that would cut through the heart of Alaska’s northernmost mountain range.
